IELTS Test Types

IELTS Academic

Designed for those applying to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, or seeking professional registration. The Academic version assesses whether you are ready to begin studying in English at a university or higher education institution.

  • Required for university admissions
  • Professional registration bodies accept it
  • Topics are academic in nature
  • Reading and writing tasks are more complex
IELTS General Training

Suitable for those migrating to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs, or work experience. It focuses on basic survival skills in social and workplace contexts.

  • Required for immigration purposes
  • Training programs and work experience
  • Topics are general and practical
  • Reading passages from everyday sources

IELTS Test Modules — Detailed Breakdown

The IELTS Listening test comprises 4 sections with 40 questions. Each section is played only once, making active listening crucial for achieving a high band score.

  • Section 1: A conversation between two people set in an everyday social context (e.g., booking a hotel, making an inquiry). This is the easiest section.
  • Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context (e.g., a speech about local facilities or a talk about university campus services).
  • Section 3: A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context (e.g., a university tutor and students discussing an assignment).
  • Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject (e.g., a university lecture). This is the most challenging section.

Question Types: Multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form completion, note completion, table completion, flow chart completion, summary completion, sentence completion, short-answer questions.

Our Training Approach: At Visa Solution Plus, we provide extensive practice with authentic listening materials, teach note-taking strategies, help identify keywords and distractors, and conduct regular timed practice sessions to build speed and accuracy.

The Reading test contains 3 long passages with 40 questions. For the Academic module, passages are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers dealing with academic topics. For General Training, passages come from notices, advertisements, company handbooks, official documents, books, magazines, and newspapers.

  • Passage 1: A relatively straightforward text with descriptive or factual content
  • Passage 2: A more complex text, often discursive or analytical in nature
  • Passage 3: The most challenging passage, typically argumentative or complex analytical text

Question Types: Multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), identifying writer's views (Yes/No/Not Given), matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow chart completion, diagram label completion, short-answer questions.

Our Training Approach: We teach skimming and scanning techniques, paragraph analysis methods, time management strategies (20 minutes per passage), and practice with Cambridge Official IELTS materials.

The Writing test consists of 2 tasks. Both Academic and General Training have the same Task 2, but Task 1 differs significantly.

Academic Writing:
  • Task 1 (20 minutes, 150+ words): Describe, summarize, or explain a visual representation of data — a graph, table, chart, or diagram. You may need to describe and explain data, describe stages of a process, or describe an object or event.
  • Task 2 (40 minutes, 250+ words): Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. You must present a clear position, support your ideas with relevant examples, and demonstrate coherent argumentation.
General Training Writing:
  • Task 1 (20 minutes, 150+ words): Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) requesting information or explaining a situation.
  • Task 2 (40 minutes, 250+ words): Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem (same as Academic).

Assessment Criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy — each worth 25%.

The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. It assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English and consists of 3 parts:

  • Part 1 — Introduction & Interview (4-5 minutes): The examiner asks general questions about yourself, your home, work, studies, interests, and a range of familiar topic areas.
  • Part 2 — Individual Long Turn (3-4 minutes): You receive a task card with a topic and must speak for 1-2 minutes. You get 1 minute to prepare and make notes.
  • Part 3 — Two-way Discussion (4-5 minutes): The examiner asks further questions connected to the topic in Part 2, allowing you to discuss more abstract ideas and issues.

Assessment Criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Pronunciation — each worth 25%.

Our Training Approach: Regular mock speaking sessions with certified trainers, video recording and analysis, fluency drills, topic-specific vocabulary building, and accent neutralization exercises.
