PTE Academic

Pearson Test of English Academic — The fast, fair, and flexible computer-based English test accepted worldwide.

100% AI Scored Results in 48 Hours Accepted Globally

What is PTE Academic?

The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is a computer-based English language proficiency test developed by Pearson Education. Unlike IELTS and TOEFL which involve human examiners, PTE Academic is entirely AI-scored, ensuring 100% objective and unbiased assessment. This makes PTE one of the fastest-growing English tests in the world.

PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of universities worldwide, including prestigious institutions across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, and USA. It is also approved by the Australian Government for all visa applications and by New Zealand Immigration for visa purposes, making it especially popular among students and migrants targeting these destinations.

The test is conducted at Pearson-owned test centers worldwide and results are typically available within 48 hours — one of the fastest turnaround times among English proficiency tests. You can send unlimited score reports to institutions for free, and there is no limit on how many times you can take the test.

At Visa Solution Plus, our PTE coaching program is designed by experienced trainers who understand the AI scoring algorithms. We train you not just in English language skills but specifically in the techniques that the AI evaluator looks for, ensuring maximum scores across all communicative skills.

PTE Test Format

The PTE Academic test is approximately 2 hours long and consists of 3 main parts. However, it assesses 4 communicative skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) plus 2 enabling skills (Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse).

Part 1: Speaking & Writing (54-67 minutes)

This combined section tests your speaking and writing abilities through multiple task types:

  • Personal Introduction (not scored): 25-second recording about yourself
  • Read Aloud (6-7 items): Read a text aloud — tests pronunciation, oral fluency, and content
  • Repeat Sentence (10-12 items): Listen and repeat exactly — critical for scoring
  • Describe Image (3-4 items): Describe an image/graph in 40 seconds
  • Re-tell Lecture (1-2 items): Listen to a lecture and retell key points
  • Answer Short Question (5-6 items): Give a one-word or short answer
  • Summarize Written Text (1-2 items): Write a one-sentence summary (5-75 words)
  • Essay (1-2 items): Write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic
Part 2: Reading (29-30 minutes)

Reading tasks assess your ability to understand academic texts:

  • Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks (5-6 items): Select the correct words from a dropdown to complete a passage
  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer (1-2 items): Choose all correct answers from a list
  • Re-order Paragraphs (2-3 items): Arrange text boxes in the correct sequence
  • Reading: Fill in the Blanks (4-5 items): Drag and drop words to fill blanks in a passage
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer (1-2 items): Choose the single correct answer
Part 3: Listening (30-43 minutes)

Listening tasks evaluate comprehension of spoken English:

  • Summarize Spoken Text (1-2 items): Listen and write a 50-70 word summary
  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer (1-2 items): Choose all correct answers after listening
  • Fill in the Blanks (2-3 items): Type missing words while listening
  • Highlight Correct Summary (1-2 items): Choose the summary that matches the recording
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer (1-2 items): Choose one correct answer
  • Select Missing Word (1-2 items): Identify the missing word at the end of recording

PTE Preparation Strategies

1
Master Repeat Sentence

This task contributes to multiple scores. Practice shadowing technique — listen and speak simultaneously to build auditory memory.

2
Write from Dictation is Gold

Each word correct = 1 point contributing to both Writing and Listening. Focus heavily on this task for maximum score boost.

3
Speak Clearly, Not Fast

The AI evaluates pronunciation and oral fluency separately. Speak at a natural pace with clear pronunciation.

4
Use Templates for Essays

Develop reusable essay templates that cover introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion structures.

5
Practice with Scored Mock Tests

Use PTE-specific mock tests that provide AI-scored feedback similar to the actual test.

6
Focus on High-Value Tasks

Some tasks contribute to multiple skills. Prioritize Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, and Write from Dictation.

7
Improve Typing Speed

The test is computer-based. A typing speed of 30+ WPM ensures you can complete writing tasks comfortably.

8
Understand AI Scoring Logic

Learn what the AI evaluator looks for — content, pronunciation, oral fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

The PTE Academic test fee in India is approximately ₹15,900. Late booking may incur additional charges. Pearson frequently offers early bird discounts and bundled pricing for those ordering practice materials along with test booking.

PTE Academic is the preferred English test for Australian immigration because it is accepted for all Australian visa categories, provides fast results (within 48 hours), allows unlimited free score reports, and its AI scoring eliminates examiner subjectivity. The Australian Department of Home Affairs accepts PTE Academic for student, skilled worker, and permanent residency visas.

PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. After this period, scores are no longer accessible in your Pearson account and you would need to retake the test if required for visa or admission purposes.

PTE and IELTS test different skills in different formats. PTE may be easier for students who are comfortable with computer-based testing, have good typing skills, and prefer AI scoring over human evaluation. The Speaking section in PTE (recorded on computer) is often considered less stressful than the face-to-face IELTS interview. Our counsellors can help you choose the right test based on your strengths.
