What is PTE Academic?

The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) is a computer-based English language proficiency test developed by Pearson Education. PTE Test Format

The PTE Academic test is approximately 2 hours long and consists of 3 main parts. However, it assesses 4 communicative skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) plus 2 enabling skills (Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse).

Part 1: Speaking & Writing (54-67 minutes)

This combined section tests your speaking and writing abilities through multiple task types:

Personal Introduction (not scored): 25-second recording about yourself
Read Aloud (6-7 items): Read a text aloud — tests pronunciation, oral fluency, and content
Repeat Sentence (10-12 items): Listen and repeat exactly — critical for scoring
Describe Image (3-4 items): Describe an image/graph in 40 seconds
Re-tell Lecture (1-2 items): Listen to a lecture and retell key points
Answer Short Question (5-6 items): Give a one-word or short answer
Summarize Written Text (1-2 items): Write a one-sentence summary (5-75 words)
Essay (1-2 items): Write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic

Part 2: Reading (29-30 minutes)

Reading tasks assess your ability to understand academic texts:

Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks (5-6 items): Select the correct words from a dropdown to complete a passage
Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer (1-2 items): Choose all correct answers from a list
Re-order Paragraphs (2-3 items): Arrange text boxes in the correct sequence
Reading: Fill in the Blanks (4-5 items): Drag and drop words to fill blanks in a passage
Multiple Choice, Single Answer (1-2 items): Choose the single correct answer

Part 3: Listening (30-43 minutes)

Listening tasks evaluate comprehension of spoken English:

Summarize Spoken Text (1-2 items): Listen and write a 50-70 word summary
Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer (1-2 items): Choose all correct answers after listening
Fill in the Blanks (2-3 items): Type missing words while listening
Highlight Correct Summary (1-2 items): Choose the summary that matches the recording
Multiple Choice, Single Answer (1-2 items): Choose one correct answer
Select Missing Word (1-2 items): Identify the missing word at the end of recording
Highlight Incorrect Words (2-3 items): Follow along with transcript and click wrong words

PTE Scoring System

PTE Academic uses a score range of 10-90 for each communicative skill. The overall score is also reported on the 10-90 scale. PTE uses an AI-based scoring system that evaluates responses instantly.

PTE Preparation Strategies

Master Repeat Sentence

This task contributes to multiple scores. Practice shadowing technique — listen and speak simultaneously to build auditory memory.

Write from Dictation is Gold

Each word correct = 1 point contributing to both Writing and Listening. Focus heavily on this task for maximum score boost.

Speak Clearly, Not Fast
